3 II. a. ANTE-NATAL SERVICES.
Until the outbreak of war a part-time Consultant Obstretrician
(Dr. Turner) presided at the Borough Ante-Natal Clinics, assisted by
the Health Visitors. In August, 1939, Dr. Turner, under the
Emergency Medical Services Midwifery Scheme, was transferred to a
hospital in Buckinghamshire.
During September and October, 1939, the Assistant Medical
Officer of Health carried out ante-natal clinics, both for midwives
cases and hospital cases living in the Borough. In November,
1939, this work was undertaken by the Medical Officer and staff of
the Kingston County Hospital Ante-Natal Service, assisted by the
Health Visitors. Arrangements were made to hold the joint antenatal
clinics at the Health Centre, since the ante-natal rooms at
the Hospital were required for other purposes as result of the war.
This arrangement continued until November, 1942, when the
two ante-natal clinics were again run independently, the Kingston
County Hospital Medical Officer presiding at the Borough Ante-Natal
Clinic, with the assistance of the Health Visitors.
The majority of ante-natal cases whose confinement is undertaken
by a midwife, attend the Borough Ante-Natal Clinic, a lesser
number of cases attending their family doctor.

The following table gives the number of patients attending the Borough Ante-Natal Clinics during the period under review, together with the total attendances made and the numbers referred to Kingston County Hospital for further investigation:
