CEREBRO SPINAL FEVER.
One case was notified during the year. This was a
man 27 years old, who was notified from the Kingston
County Hospital and who subsequently died of the disease.
He was not a resident of Kingston.
ANTERIOR POLIOMYELITIS.
Two cases of this condition were notified during the
year. Both cases occurred in girls aged 15 and 16 years
respectively. They were not associated with one another.
In one case the evidence pointed to the infection
having been contracted in another part of the country where
the condition was epidemic at that time. In the other case
it was not possible, with certainty to determine the source
of infection and the condition was comparatively mild, and
a good recovery was made. In the other case the condition
was more severe and the paralysis more extensive.
Both girls were treated in the first instance in the
Isolation Hospital at Wimbledon and later in the Orthopaedic
Hospital where they responded well to a lengthy
course of specialized treatment.
DYSENTERY.
Thirty-two cases of Bacillary Dysentery of the Sonne
type were notified, all of which were in-patients at the
Kingston County Hospital. The disease occurred in
patients of all ages and two cases died, one under one
year and one over sixty-five.
TUBERCULOSIS.
Cases of Tuberculosis notified in the Borough come
under the administrative control of the Surrey County
Council.
Every effort is made to assist the County Medical
Officer and Tuberculosis Officer in their activities in the
area.
A Sanitary Inspector is detailed to visit each notified
case and report on the condition of the premises, and also
to advise all contacts to consult the County Tuberculosis
Officer.
The efficiency of notification of Tuberculosis is fairly
good, and there have been no cases of wilful neglect or
refusal to notify. The ratio of non-notified to total deaths
is 1 : 21.
