Report of
Chief Sanitary Inspector
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit the Annual Report on the work carried
out by your Sanitary Inspectors during the year 1937, in
connection with the various Statutes and Byelaws relating
to Public Health in force within the Borough. The present
Report is the nineteenth annual statement I have had the
honour to present to you.
The total number of inspections and visits made during
the past year was 9944 as compared with 9431 during the
year 1936.
In the Register of Sanitary Defects, 526 new entries
were made, and 634 previous entries were cancelled following
upon compliance with notices served. On December
31st, 1937, 408 separate entries remained on the Register,
compared with 516 at the end of 1936. Included in the
408 entries referred to, 60 were in respect of houses awaiting
demolition, etc., and 30 in respect of houses in Elton
Road where redrainage is contemplated. The remaining
entries were in respect of premises upon which sundry
sanitary defects were found.
Four hundred and ninety "preliminary" and 40 verbal
notices were served during 1937. In 21 instances this informal
action did not bring about the desired result and it
was necessary to serve " statutory " notices.
