History became real when visiting the castles at
Conway, Caernarvon and Beaumaris.
Valuable, above all, was the living together in a small
community and having ample opportunities to exercise the
habits of honesty, forbearance, unselfishness, self-reliance
and self control.
May we quote Ruskin, "The entire object of true
education is to make people not merely do the right things,
but enjoy the right things." Here is the great objective of
the educational school journey.
2 Bonner Hill Road Central School for Girls.
A school journey was made by a party of twenty-four
girls from Bonner Hill Road Central School under the
supervision of two mistresses. They spent a fortnight at
Holmbury St Mary and lived in a bungalow in a field at
the edge of the woods.
The object of the journey was "education through
nature" and this spot was chosen because it is in the heart
of one of the loveliest parts of the girls' native county.
A detailed programme was arranged including nature
study rambles, visits to places of historical and literary
interest, map reading, a drive through the country to the
coast, reading and memorising of passages of poems
by Belloc, Kipling, etc., and physical exercises in the field.
The domestic arrangements were excellent, the weather was
good and the girls profited both physically and mentally
from their fortnight of life and work in the open.
PHYSICAL TRAINING.
The Board of Education Syllabus of physical training
is followed in the schools. This is carried out as much as
possible in the open air.
The School Medical Officer advises as to children who
are not suitable for physical trainnig.
