OFFENSIVE TRADES.
There are but three trades within the Borough which
may be described legally as " Offensive " trades. They are :
Leather Tanning and Fellmongering.
Rags and Bone Yards.
Fish Frying.
Each of these trades require to be carried on with
particular care to prevent annoyance or nuisance. It is
doubtful if more than a small percentage of passers-by
realize that a tannery is situated so close to the business
centre of the town, so seldom can its presence be detected.
No complaints have been received in respect of the tannery
for several years, but one complaint was received during
the year regarding one of the other trades.
There has been no change in the number of rag and
bone yards in the Borough. Frequent visits are necessary
to these premises to see that all possible steps are taken to
prevent the occurrence of nuisances.
During the year permission was sought to commence
the trade of fish frying in Surbiton Road. The suggestion
was not approved, and no formal application was made.
Towards the end of the year one small fish shop in
Acre Road ceased to function and has now been converted
into a meat shop.
Fish frying was commenced without permission at
premises in Hawks Road but the business was terminated
after notice from the Corporation.
Likewise the trade of rag collection was recommenced
for a short period at premises in Acre Road without the
necessary permission of the Corporation. In this case the
business was carried on at a private house and permission
to continue the trade was refused.
Only a few of the fishmongers in the town have not
availed themselves of the facilities for the daily removal of
fish waste by one contractor. The arrangement has proved
very satisfactory. The contractor delivers clean galvanised
iron bins of heavy gauge fitted with sound fitting lids each
