ENTERIC FEVER (including Paratyphoid).
Five cases of Paratyphoid B. were notified during the
year. There were no fatal cases.
(1) On May 12th a young woman, aged 21, was admitted
to the Kingston Victoria Hospital from a comfortable home.
She had first complained of illness on May 2nd. It appears
probable that she was infected during a walking tour at
Easter, April 20th, though no definite source of infection was
traced.
(2) (3) and (4) On July 5th two young women, aged 21
and 25, were notified from Kingston Victoria Hospital. They
were employees at a Kingston shop. On July 11th a man
aged 36 was notified and removed to Isolation Hospital.
He was employed at the same shop.
Everything pointed to a common source of infection,
but in spite of exhaustive investigations and special examination
of a cook as a possible carrier, no definite source was
found. No further cases occurred among the large number
of employees at this shop.
(5) On August 18th, a girl, aged 11, was notified from
the Kingston Victoria Hospital. The origin of this case is
obscure.
SMALLPOX.
One case of smallpox occurred in a man aged 64. He
was under observation as a contact of a case in London. I
visited him on Sunday, March 23rd, and found the rash had
appeared, and he was removed to the Smallpox Hospital at
East Clandon the same day.
There were six contacts, five of whom were revaccinated.
The remaining contact being an old lady, who had had
smallpox when young.
None of the contacts contracted the disease.
PNEUMONIA.
The number of cases notified was 29 compared with 57
last year. The reduction is accounted for by the fact that
there was no prevalence of influenza during the year.
PUERPERAL FEVER, PUERPERAL PYREXIA &
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM.
Comment on these diseases will be found under the
Maternity and Child Welfare Section of this Report.
