At the present time Kingston's population density is
31.9 persons to the acre (the largest population density
except one of non-county boroughs throughout England and
Wales).
If vacant land becomes available as a consequence of
Section 46 of the Local Government Act, 1930, or otherwise,
the question will automatically right itself, but as to
how far the Corporation are prepared at the present time
to indicate the extent which they are prepared to develop
land in a neighbouring authority in the future, is a matter
which the Council are not prepared to bind themselves at
the moment, and which will be dependent on the question
for subsequent consideration as to whether or not the
Corporation are prepared to house their people outside their
area and thereby deplete their population and the product
of a penny rate.
The Corporation have just entered into a contract for
the erection of a further 140 houses to be erected on land
recently purchased by them and situate within the area of
the Urban District Council of the Maidens and Coombe,
and it is understood that these houses will be completed
during the next year or so. This figure is, of course, included
in the number set forth in the statement below and
as being contemplated to be erected during the course of
the next five years.
Owing to the large number of applications received,
the Housing Committee of the Corporation have up to the
present only granted tenancies of Corporation houses to
applicants who have at the date of their application two or
more children, and who have resided in the Borough of
Kintrston-upon-Thames for upwards of ten vears.

Below is given particulars of the houses erected each year in the Borough during the last five years by private enterprise, but few of the small number of houses so erected could be considered to be houses of the working-class type :
