Children for whom spectacles are prescribed are reinspected
by the School Medical Officer when he visits the
Schools each term.
The Head Teachers are periodically sent lists of those
children who should have their glasses in constant wear.
(d) Dental Clinic.
During the year four sessions per School Week were
devoted to Dental Inspection and Treatment.
In all, 27 half-days were given to Inspection and 141
to Treatment.
When necessary, a session is devoted entirely to those
requiring a general anaesthetic, when the School Medical
Officer attends to administer the nitrous-oxide gas. There
were 234 gas cases during the year.
Mr. H. A. L. Morris, the School Dentist, reports as
follows :—
" During the year the time given to inspection and
treatment until February 28th was three sessions of 2½ hours
per School Week, and from that date four Sessions per
week, directed to children aged 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, also all
the children at the Physically Defective School and
" Specials," i.e., children not eligible for Routine Treatment
referred by School Medical Officer, etc.
" All the children in the Routine Groups were inspected
during the year; absentees at the first visit to the School
were inspected later in the year, during my re-visit. This,
in conjunction with the arrears of cases brought forward
from 1927, has given me a considerable waiting list of
approximately 450 children.
" There was an increase all round in the work for the
year, due to the extra session per week. The number of
" Specials " treated remains fairly constant. The rise in
the number of gas administrations enabled me to practically
clear off the arrears of waiting gas cases.
" To carry out the progressive programme as in previous
years—that is, to inspect and treat where necessary all
children born in 1918 and subsequently, " Specials " and
Physically Defective children—means that another large
group is automatically added each year. This will necessitate
an increase in the number of sessions for treatment, and
also further gas sessions."
