Five cases were mild and due to a variety of causes,
such as breast abscess, femora! thrombosis, etc., but 3 died,
and the following is a brief record of these fatal cases:—
Case 1.—Age 26. Confined at her home on February
16th, 1928. Attended by a midwife. Got up on February
26th, 1928, but fell ill the following day, when she sent for
the midwife, who summoned a doctor. Notified as Puerperal
Pyrexia on February 28th, 1928, and admitted to the
Kingston & District Hospital on March 2nd, 1928; She died
on March 3rd, 1928, and an inquest was held, the medical
evidence as to the cause of death being "Syncope from
double lobar pneumonia."
Case 2.—Age 34. Confined in the Kingston and District
Hospital on March 23rd, 1928. Notified as Puerperal
Pyrexia on April 2nd, 1928, and died on April 8th, 1928.
Cause of death — "Broncho-pneumonia" — Parturition,
placenta praevia with severe ante-partum haemorrhage.
Case 3.—Age 26. Confined in the Kingston & District
Hospital on April 5th, 1928. Notified as Puerperal Pyrexia
on April 18th, 1928, and died on the same day. Cause of
death—Syncope and shock from torsion of left (Cystic) ovary
following labour.
PUERPERAL FEVER.
A case was notified on June 19th, 1928, by a doctor
who was called in by a midwife to a woman aged 38, who
had been confined on June 9th, 1928, at her home. She was
admitted to the Kingston & District Hospital, and recovered.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM.
A Health Visitor is instructed to visit immediately upon
notification, and enquire into the circumstances of the case.
