Before taking action in respect of property, the tenant
is usually asked if the owner has been acquainted with the
conditions. This avoids unnecessary friction, as in the
event of a negative reply, the tenant is referred to the owner
direct before further action is taken.
The drainage systems of old houses in the Borough are
seldom found to be in good order, and no less than 31 houses
were entirely redrained during 1926.
A house-to-house inspection of ashbin accommodation
was continued during the year, with good result.
Very considerable works have been carried out to houses
in Acre Road following Housing Inspections.
The time available for systematic house-to-house inspection
is not great, and, as in past years, the inspection of
a large number of houses with a view to producing statistics
only has been avoided.
During the year efforts were concentrated upon a reduction
in the number of premises under review, and as a result,
the number outstanding at the end of 1926 was less than

The number of statutory notices served during the year
shows an increase but only 18 of the notices related to serious
sanitary defects whilst the remainder required the provision

less than 21 notices served in the Elm Crescent area during
1925 requiring premises to be redrained. Of the remainder,
62 referred to ashbins and 11 to sanitary defects in dwelling
houses.

Register, making a total of 41 on December 31st, 1926,
compared with 33 at the end of the year 1922, when the
