The other road inspected was Excelsior Road. Whilst
the houses in this road showed signs of neglect in the
fabric the internal conditions were very dissimilar when
compared with Asylum Road. The rooms were generally
clean and sweet and there was practically no overcrowding.
The following figures relate to Excelsior Road :—
Total houses, 35.
Average rent per week, 10s. 6½d.
Total occupants, 128 adults, 42 children.
Average persons per house, 4.85.
Average persons per room, 1.05.
Average persons per bedroom, 2.15.
Constant re-inspections have been made whilst works
have proceeded in both the above roads and whilst the
houses in Excelsior Road are now much improved, both
internally and externally, some of the houses let in lodgings
in Asylum Road returned to their usual grimy condition soon
after the rooms had been thoroughly cleansed and distempered.
Other houses in the same road are maintained in a
perfectly clean condition by the tenants and lodgers. One
can only recommend the rigid application of the Byelaws for
Houses let in Lodgings.
