SHOPS ACT etc. ADMINISTRATION
Mr. D.G. Tonkin / Chief Inspector, Mr. T,G. Gilbert †,
Mr. L. Pinguey, Inspectors
(†Member, Institute of Shops Act Administration)
SHOPS ACT, 1950
Despite much agitation in the press and through various organisations there was no amending
shops legislation during the period. With the growth of multiple shops trading in many different
localities the matter of enforcing rules and orders does at times become very complicated. Despite
this, however, the vast majority of shopkeepers in East Ham are very willing to comply with directions,
and a good relationship is maintained with the local Chamber of Trade.
The Act as it now is deals not only with closing hours of shops, and many benefits have been
obtained for assistants in the matters of heating, and ventilation, sanitary accommodation, "time off"
and hours of employment of juveniles.
Complaints are often received from shopkeepers regarding mobile shops, but under a recent ruling
of the High Court they do not fall within the provisions of the Act relating to closing hours.
