From time to time I have drawn attention to the decline ir mortality from pulmonary tuberculosis
due to a combination of medical and environmental circumstances. In 1952, 26 persons died from this
disease of the lungs In 1959, only 8 succumbed in this way. It is more pleasing even to record the
decline in the incidence of new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis,, for each new notification indicates a
potential source of infection to an ever widening circle of contacts. Reference to the appended table
Indicates the gradual decline in the incidence of new cases (i.e„ a steady fall in the attack rate)
between the years 1954/59.
It is more important now, than ever before, to discover the "new case" before he has had a chance
to disseminate the disease, and here the alert general practitioner, the local authority clinic and
school medical officers, the chest clinic ana the local Mass Radiograph Unit all share a heavy
responsibility.
