Nevertheless an increased total of 508 inspections was made of these premises,
and it was necessary to serve 11 routine notices in respect of premiss where defects
were found. The defects comprised want of cleanliness unreasonable temperature,
insufficient and unsuitable or defective sanitary conveniences Liaison was maintained
with H. M. Inspector of Factories and all the infringements of the Act were remedied,
There were also 340 Outworkers on the Register The persons concerned dealt' in the
vast majority of cases with wearing apparel-214, assembling Christmas crackers etc.,
-76. All these premises were visited to ensure that the work was carried out under
suitable conditions.
(J) Mosquito Control
Complaints with regard to mosquito infestation have reduced materially in the last
few years, but the practice of spraying ditches and other likely breeding places as a
precautionary measure, was continued
(K) Places of Public Entertainment
These premises continued to receive attention Generally it is found that
managements and owners of such premises are only too willing to co-operate with the
department in ensuring that the Regulations with regard to Public Health standards
are maintained.
(L) Smoke Abatement
The position with regard to legislation concerning atmospheric pollution remained
as heretofore Parliament not yet having got down to the business of accepting the
recommendation of the Beaver Report. Nevertheless much attention was given to the
problem by the local staff, and every opportunity was taken to impress upon factory
managements the necessity of putting their house in order before compulsory powers
were brought to bear on them. In some cases improvements were made.

(N) Diseases of Animals Act
Foot and Mouth disease and swine fever and fowl pest are constantly breaking out
in some part or other of the country and as three slaughterhouses were working in the
town it was necessary to follow closely the numerous Orders made by the Ministry
respecting the movement of livestock. Licenses as necessary were issued by the
department, and as usual visits of inspection were paid to the Docks in connection
with the importation or exportation of animals and certain foodstuffs.
