Prosecutions re food
Legal proceedings were instituted as under:-
(i) Selling pork sausages deficient in meat content - Conditional
discharge 12 months - Costs awarded against Vendor.
(ii) Selling bread containing foreign body - rodent excreta
Fined £10.
(iii) Selling pork sausages deficient in meat content - Warrantor
fined £5 and costs.
(iv) Selling a meat pie containing foreign body, to wit glass
Fined £10 and costs.
LEGISLATION
1. The following Acts of Parliament directly affecting the work of the
Section were passed during 1953:—
Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1953
Slaughter of Animals (Pigs) Act 1953
Merchandise Marks Act 1953.
2. In addition no less than 35 Statutory Instruments concerned with inter
alia, Food, Diseases of Animals (excluding Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth
Disease Orders) Housing, Drugs, Poisons, Explosives, were made and affected
the work of the Section.

SHOPS ACT. 1950
The Home Office published a memorandum during the year under the title
"Suggested Provisions for amending Shops Legislation". The memorandum
followed the Report of the Gowers Committee and sought to remove certain
ambiguities and anomalies in existing legislation which in many instances by
its indetermination proves very difficult to administer effectively. However,
although discussion proceeded, the law stood still.
