(B) Notices
The number of notices during the year totalled 3,151 of which 831 were
statutory notices. The number of notices compiled with in the same period
was 2,698, of which 661 were statutory notices. Complaints made to the
Department with regard to sanitary circumstances, disrepair, infestations,
obstructed drains, etc., totalled 2,747.
(C) Rodent Control
The number of complaints received in respect of rat and mice infestation
totalled 278. The Rodent Operator made 2,690 visits, and it is estimated
that 872 rats were destroyed.
No major infestations were discovered, and practically all the complaints
of rat infestation were traced to defective drainage. It is usual for the
department to carry out the repair of the drains by agreement with and at
the expense of the owners of the respective premises, though in a few instances
defects in the road sewerage were discovered and the Borough Engineer
promptly arranged for the necessary repair.
(D) Disinfection and Disinfestation
It was found necessary or desirable to carry out this work at 339
premises during the year. 211 after cases of infectious disease had been
reported, 121 in respect of bug infestation and 208 for other causes e.g.
beetles. insects and "smelly" premises.
The steam disinfector for disinfecting bedding was used on 86 days
during the year. It is pleasing to note the continued decrease in the
number of bug infested premises (144 - 133 - 121) though conversely wood
beetle damage to timbers in houses appears to show a marked increase over
the pre-war incidence.
