CLEAN FOOD CAMPAIGN.
Reference was made in the 1951 report to the formation of a Food Hygiene
Guild in the borough.
At the first annual general meeting of the Food Hygiene Guild on 18th
February, 1953, the Advisory Committee submitted a report on the work of
the Guild since its inception.
The constitution, administration and objects were set out in detail,
and
(a) The promotion of improvement in hygienic manufacture, handling and
distribution of all foodstuffs;
(b) The encouragement of the observance of all statutory standards of
food hygiene;
(c) The application of codes of practice to be drawn up and agreed by
the Guild;
(d) The co-operation of the public by means of appropriate methods of
publicity in the maintenance of a suitable standard of food hygiene;
were the main alms of the Guild.
Membership of the Guild was possible for employers and employees alike,
all applications being considered by the Advisory Committee, together with
the report of the Hon. Executive Officer.
Certificates of membership were granted to sixty-seven applicants,
and provisional membership to a further one hundred and fifty-nine applicants.
These groups of traders and employers are deemed to have achieved a
sufficiently high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in the conduct of
their shop premises, having regard to the requirements of the Food &
Drugs Act, 1936, and the Bye Laws of the East Ham Council made thereunder.
Sanctions and regulations for the maintenance of standards were also
agreed.
The second annual general meeting was held on 25th November, 195*4, and
variations in the constitution to widen representation were agreed.
Codes of practice for employees, which have been adopted, were set cut
in detail and it was noted that 171 employers and 88 employees had become
full members since the inception of the Guild.
From 1st to 5th March, 1954, a Clean Food Exhibition was held in the
Minor Hall, and many local traders co-operated in making the exhibition a
success.
