POPULATION
The Registrar General's estimates of the population at 30th June each
year were :-
1953 - 119,000
1954 - 117,700
The corresponding figure for 1952 was 120,000
Hie various rates per 1,000 population quoted In this report are based
on the above estimates.
The decline in population can be attributed broadly to three main causes;-
(1) The steady fall in the birth rate since 1946 and the steady rise in the
number of old people so that the actual reproductive group of the population
is reduced In number.
(2) The policy of the Council to decant fractions of the population to 'out
County' housing estates.
(3) Workers leaving the borough to live nearer their jobs or to purchase
houses in other areas, plus a steady trickle of emigrants to Canada,
Australasia and South Africa. Most of the emigrants are between 25 and
h5 years of age, that is at the height of reproductive potential.
