Eighty-eight samples of milk were submitted for chemical analysis i.e.
fat content etc., all of which were satisfactory.
Ninety-six samples were submitted for bacteriological sampling.
Five were not entirely satisfactory and minor faults were traced in the
plant of a local dairy which were later remedied.
One tin of cream was found to be not bacterlologlcally satisfactory.
The bulk suppliers were notified and the remainder withdrawn from sale.
(b) Meat Inspection

From the 1st July three private slaughterhouses were licensed to operate, and the following table shows the number of animals killed and examined;

There were 89 butchers shops In the town and frequent inspection
of premises and stock was made.
Altogether 2,545 lbs. of meat was certified as being unfit for
human consumption.
The Slaughterhouses Act 1954, which brought up to date provisions
relating to slaughterhouses, and the Slaughter of Animals (Amendment)
Act 1954 contained provisions relating to slaughter of horses,
licensing of slaughtermen and types of Instrument used.
Following the Government's avowed long term policy of "moderate
concentration" the Conference of South West Essex Authorities re the provision
of a regional public abattoir was re-convened. Information
regarding the needs of the Area served was discussed, but by the end of
the year no definite proposals were formulated.
The Slaughter of Animals (Pigs) Act 1953 providing for the humane
slaughter of pigs in places other than slaughterhouses and knackers yards
came into operation on the 1st July 1954, and the Slaughter of Animals
(Amendment) Act 1954 which Implemented certain recommendations of the
Committee of Enquiry Into the Slaughter of Horses and further amended
enactments relating to the slaughter of animals and licensing of slaughtermen
was operative from 1st October 1954.
(c) Ice Cream
22 premises were on the register for the manufacture of ice cream
and 287 premises, Including 17 new applications were registered for the
sale of ice cream. Particularly during the summer months when they are
mostly operating, the former receive constant visits of inspection.
24 samples of Ice cream were submitted for bacteriological examination
with the following results ;
