is hoped that building of the Day Special School for Educationally Subnormal
children will soon commence„
The work, of "ascertaining" children who need special educational provision
as handicapped pupils is perhaps one of the less well known functions
of the Medical Officers, although it is of paramount importance to the
welfare of the children concerned and always calls for wide clinical knowledge
and sound judgement.
98 special examinations were carried out during the year and recommendations
for special educational treatment were made in respect of 42 children,
as follows

† Examinations of children with suspected speech defects are not included
in the special examinations under this paragraph, but those requiring
speech therapy are classified as Handicapped Pupils.
Two children ascertained as Physical Handicapped were recommended for
home tuition.
Twelve cases were found to be subject to be dealt with under the provisions
of Section 57 of the Act :-
