post-war years has resulted in an increasing number of traders seeking
registration, and emphasizes the need for constant vigilance by the
Department. It was not found necessary to refuse any applications for
registration during the year and 28 new applications were approved,,
The number of premises on the register at the end of the year was 139
including 21 equipped for the manufacture of ice cream.
During the year, the Food Standards (Ice Cream) Order, 1951 came
into operation, and for the first time prescribed a chemical standard
for ice cream, viz, all ice cream should contain at least 5% fat,
10% sugar and 7½% milk solids other than fat. All samples submitted
for analysis satisfied the standards; the highest fat content was
13.8%, the lowest 7%, and the average 10.2%. The samples submitted
for bacteriological examination showed a higher percentage in the
Ministry of Health's Provisional Grade I, and indicates that the constant
attention given by the Inspectors to manufacturers' premises,
coupled with the co-operation of traders organisations, is showing
beneficial results.
