The number of premises on the Council's register at the end
of the year was 111, of these 21 were equipped for the manufacture of
ice-cream.
The number of itinerant vendors in the Borough of this
delectable but vulnerable foodstuff showed a sharp decline. This may
nave been due to (1) the unfavourable summer season (2) the often
informal but constant pressure and supervision exercised by the Depart™
ment In regard to the activities of these unregistered traders.
(6) Other foods. Foodstuffs sold in the Borough were generally of good
quality. The co-operation of local traders was readily forthcoming
tn this respect and the following foodstuffs were surrendered by them
and condemned as unfit for human food
Canned goods
Milk. 1,456 tins, fish 1,520, fruit 390, meat 366, other foods 2,758
tins or packages.
Others
Meat 1,895 lbs.s fish 1,400 lbs., fruit. 749 lbs., cheese 106 lbs.,
confectionery 69 lbs., vegetables 1,792 lbs., spaghetti 91i lbs.,
pearl barley 56 lbs., coconut 130 lbs.. Ice-cream 18 gallons.
One local trader was prosecuted and fined £15. and £l.ls.0d. costs
for selling a macaroon tart containing rodent excreta. This offence
occurred In December 1949.
(c) Adulteration.
Three hundred and forty three samples of foodstuffs were
obtained by the Sanitary Inspectors and submitted to the Public Analyst.
Details of the various samples and the results of the analyses are set
forth in the following tabular statements.
Of the samples reported as unsatisfactory, 2 were due to
deficiencies, 4 to some form of contamination, 5 to the presence of
preservative, which although within the permitted limits, was not
disclosed to the purchaser. One sample was mlsdescrlbed as non-brewed
vinegar instead of artificial vinegar and in another instance rye flour
was erroneously sold as oatmeal
