The importance of oral hygiene in disease is well known
and especially so in Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The patients much
appreciate the work of the Dental Department and are ready to
avail themselves of its services.
Patients' and Staff Amenities.
During the year several concert parties visited the Sanatorium
to entertain the patients and they Were much appreciated. The
Sanatorium has now become better known in the district and we
are having increasing numbers of offers of entertainment.
The Sanatorium Library, now incorporated in the Library
Department of the Order of St. John and British Red Cross, continues
to play an important part in the Sanatorium life. We are,
however, in need of a permanent Librarian, and I am communicating
with various local voluntary bodies for a volunteer in this respect.
At this stage I wish to put forward a plea that the grounds will
in future receive adequate attention. I refer particularly to the
land surrounding the new Pavilion Ward, where the necessary
landscaping and levelling was held up by the war. The present
gardening staff is inadequate to undertake this extra work. Also,
as there are few amenities for the Nursing and Domestic staffs,
could not the old tennis court be renovated?
For the past three years, Mr. Dean, from the Education Department,
has been attending twice a week, and I wish to thank him for
his excellent work and assiduous attendance. He gives the patients
talks on general knowledge, arranges quizzes and competitions,
etc., and the patients much appreciate his visits.
It is hoped in the future to provide facilities for Art Therapy,
with the help of the National Association for the Prevention of
Tuberculosis. This form of creative and diversional therapy is
being successfully carried out at many Sanatoria.
The internal and external decorations of the Wards and
Nurses' Home and Administrative Offices are in a bad state of repair
and it is sincerely hoped that these repairs and repainting, now
long overdue, will be executed as soon as possible.
