Disinfestation for vermin of various types was
effected at 205 premises, an unusual feature being the
number of complaints of beetle infestations. The
general application of D.D.T. has considerably simplified
the treatment of bug infested houses.
(e) Legal Proceedings.—The following statement indicates
the legal proceedings undertaken during the year:—
Public Health Act 1936—Cases withdrawn
(nuisance abated) 7
Food and Drugs Act 1938 2
(/) Drainage.—761 complaints of choked drains were received
and in the majority of cases the removal of the obstruction
was promptly effected by the Council's drain cleaner.
Many and various are the causes of these obstructions,
and if more care were exercised by the users, fewer drains
would be affected.
During the year considerable works of maintenance
and repair were carried out, either at the request of or in
default of owners.
In all cases of war damaged houses rebuilt under the
direction of the Housing Department, the existing drainage
has been tested and renewed when found defective.
(g) Factories.—During the year 51 visits were made to
factories, workplaces and outworkers. In cases where
reports from H.M. Inspector of Factories were received
regarding sanitary disrepair or lack of sanitary accommodation,
immediate inspection was made and remedies
effected. It is hoped to extend this work of factory
inspection during the forthcoming year.
