It is unfortunately a fact that until a drain fails to
function properly, few people realise the vital
importance of an efficient water carriage system or
that the modern system of drainage has its limitations
as to the type and quantity of waste material which
it can receive and carry away. In addition the condition
of the drainage system of the Borough has been
adversely affected by the ravages of war.
Considerable work in connection with the renewal of
drainage and sanitary fitments of war damaged houses
and other premises was carried out in collaboration
with the Housing Department.
(f) Factories.—During the year 64 visits were made to factories,
workplaces and outworkers. It is regretted that it was not
found possible to devote more attention to this most
essential work.
(g) Mosquito Control.—Treatment with larvicide of mosquito
infested ditches and marshland in the southern part of the
Borough, and the many derelict static water tanks sited
throughout the Borough was undertaken during the year
with particularly satisfactory results.
(h) Places of Public Entertainment.—Frequent visits of inspection
usually after normal offices hours, have been made to
cinemas and other places of public entertainment and a
number of sanitary defects and other unsatisfactory
conditions remedied.
HOUSING.
During the year 3,487 surveys of premises were made for the
Housing Department as to the "crowded" conditions of applicants
for rehousing. With the limited staff available this work of necessity
retarded the activities of the inspectorate in other aspects of sanitary
administration.
Housing Statistics.
