East Ham Tuberculosis After-Care Committee.
The After-Care Committee has been enabled during the past year
to increase its grants for the provision of bedding, clothing, etc.,
and has thus afforded much help to tuberculosis patients. Each year
shows a greater demand and a desire to take advantage of the
facilities available, which only can be met by augmentation of funds.

Maternity and Child Welfare.
Midwifery Services.
As indicated in my last report, the Authority appointed 3
municipal midwives under the Midwives Act, 1936 and the establishment
was increased to four during 1946. The number of cases booked
rapidly increased from the beginning of the year as is shown by the
figures in the table printed below. Two temporary midwives have
been employed for varying periods during the year and in order
that the midwives could devote more of their time to attending
the actual confinements, 3 nurses were engaged temporarily to assist
in the visiting and nursing of mothers.

Number of cases attended by them since 1942 is shewn below:—
