The Council decided in December, 1936, to charge no fees in
respect of licences granted under the Milk (Special Designations)
Order, 1936.
(b) Meat and Other Foods.
(1) Meat Inspection.—Periodic visits to butchers shops and
market stalls were made during the year. The slaughterhouse at the
rear of 524, Romford Road was substantially damaged by enemy
action during 1944. In the previous year this had been in use for the
slaughter of horses.
(2) Food Premises.—The number of inspections made of food premises
included 30 dairies, 4 of bakehouses and 774 of other premises. In the
latter figure are included 258 visits necessitating examination of
foodstuffs affected by enemy action.
(3) Slaughterhouses.—No slaughterhouse was in use during 1944.
(4) Bacteriological Samples.—128 samples were submitted for bacteriological
examination during the year, including 118 of milk, 4 of
domestic water, 4 of swimming bath water and 2 of ditch water.
(5) Other Foods.—Inspection of other foods resulted in the
condemnation for human consumption of 5,148 tins, including 447 tins
of meat and meat products, 62 tins of fruit, 145 tins of vegetables,
804 tins of fish, 1,448 tins of milk and 2,242 tins or packages of other
foods. In addition, the following foods were condemned as unfit for
human consumption, due to enemy action: 1344 lbs. meat, 995½ lbs.
fish, 175 lbs. fruit, 1,227 lbs. vegetables, 20,890 lbs. miscellaneous.
