Salvage of Furniture.
The emergency service for the salvage, removal and storage of
furniture continued to be supervised by the department. During the
year, a period of exceptional activity, 1818 removals were effected
and 382 lots of Government furniture supplied to the homeless.
The furniture stores, increased during the year from three to
fourteen, were subjected to periodic inspection and disinfestation
measures were carried out.
Public Shelters.
The high standard of cleanliness in the 252 public shelters was
maintained throughout the year. The regulation of occupants by the
Wardens' Service assisted in the prevention of overcrowding and any
insanitary conditions.
Certificates of Housing War Damage.
During the year 10,695 certificates of war damage were issued to
householders requiring rehousing or other post-raid service.
Other Emergency Duties.
The enforcement of Food Orders was carried out jointly by the
Food Inspectors in conjunction with the Weights and Measures
Officers. During the year 2,046 investigations were carried out by the
officers of the department. In connection with war damaged food
shops and the salvage of food therefrom 258 visits were made.
ROUTINE WORK.
The more routine work of sanitary inspection, resumed in the
previous year, was continued until mid 1944 when enemy action and
serious housing and other damage demanded the attention of the
inspectorate. Whilst in certain directions increased routine work
can be reported yet other matters, e.g., compliance with sanitary
notices, became secondary to the remedial measures to meet the
extensively distressing environmental conditions.
