The morale of the patients was excellent during the whole trying
period of V1 and V2 attacks. I cannot speak too highly of their
courage and of that of the nursing and domestic staff. Thanks to the
Matron's excellent organisation and the loyalty of the staff, all beds
were kept open in 1944, in spite of temporary under-staffing and the
addition of fire-watching duties to the ordinary work.
Every patient admitted was seen by Dr. Philip Ellman, and the
treatment prescribed by him was carried out with excellent results.
Increased use has been made of artificial pneumothorax treatment,
and in this connection our grateful thanks are due to the
Surgeons of the London Chest Hospital. Our cases for operation
have been treated with great efficiency and with the least possible
delay. This has been of incalculable benefit to the patients concerned.
Tuberculin injections were given to 11 cases towards the end
of the year with apparently good results. This treatment has been
more generally used lately, and definite conclusions as to its effects
should soon be available.
The patients also benefited from occupational therapy, both
indoor and outdoor. It is hoped that in the near future educational
correspondence courses will be available for those interested.
