WARTIME NURSERIES.
Since my last report, the two new Nurseries mentioned
therein have been opened:-
Wall End Road/Caledon Road on 13. 6. 44.
St. Stephens Road on 24. 7. 44.
The total permitted accommodation of the five wartime
nurseries is as follows:-
Brampton Road 70
Kensington Avenue 50
School Road 50
Wall End Road/Caledon Road 50
St. Stephens Road 74
Total: 294
Both the new nurseries are accommodated in an improved type
of pre-fabricated but of official design.
Staffing difficulties continued to a lesser extent, due to
Improved salaries and conditions, relaxation of regulations in
respect of previous experience and qualifications for the posts
of Nursery Assistants and the promotion to higher posts of
Nursery Nurses and Nursery Assistants. In addition, the Ministry
of Health lowered the age at which Student Nurses could enter
the Service from 16 years to 14 years.
During 1943, the three Nurseries then operating were generally
full to the permitted accommodation, and in addition each had a
waiting list. The opening of the two new nurseries in 1944 eased
the position considerably and those children on the waiting list
were practically all absorbed.
