INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL.
Dr. Palmer's observations are contained in the following report
upon the work of the hospital:-
PREFACE.
293 patients were admitted to the Isolation Ward, Harts Hospital
and Sanatorium during 1942, this being an increase of 111 over the
previous year. It is interesting to compare the admissions for the
past four years, viis:-
1939 - 325
1940 - 161
1341 - 182
1942 - 293
where the effect of the evacuation of children is clearly seen during
the two years, 1940 and 1941. The increase in Scarlet Fever was the
chief reason for the rise in cases admitted to the hospital, and it
was noted that though this disease continued to be non-fatal, the
severity was definitely increased, as compared with the mild type
tnat has been prevalent during recent years.
The number of deaths from all causes was three giving a mortality
rate of 1.02% as compared with 4.39% for the previous year.
Cases continue to be admitted suffering from Scabies and Impetigo
as a concomitant disease and it is evident that these troublesome
and annoying skin complaints are in no way decreasing in
incidence.
It is a cause for satisfaction that the year 1942 produced^no
cases of enteric fever. One case of Paratyphoid Fever was notified
but all investigations proved negative. Cerebro-spinal Meningitis,
which is essentially a disease of war-time, gave rise to only two
cases, both of which completely recovered with Sulphapyridine
therapy.
