Deaths.
During the year the number of East Ham civilian residents
dying was 1,684. This figure is equal to a death rate of 16.2
per 1,000 of the Registrar General's estimated population. For

Infantile Mortality.
The number of deaths of children tinder one year of ago was
66, equal to an infantile mortality rate of 41 per 1,000 live
births (41 for 1939), the rate for England and Wales being 55
per 1,000 live births.
Neo-Natal Mortality.
Children dying under the age of one month totalled 34
equal to a neo-natal mortality rate of 21.6 per 1,000 live
births. The rate for the previous year was 21.1.
Maternal Mortality.

Maternal deaths numbered 3, the rate for 1940 being 1.90 per 1,000 live births and 1.86 per 1,000 live and still births.
