free from symptoms. In point of fact, in 65% of these cases
physical signs were almost completely absent and x-ray
examination of the chest is the only means of determining the
pulmonary disease.
Spread of Tuberculosis in Shelters.
This is being adequately controlled by the new scheme now
prevailing in this Borough, by which no notified cases of
pulmonary tuberculosis are permitted to use a public shelter.
The Nutritional Problem in War- Time
This question was dealt with in our last Report, and the
points then emphasised are still relevant: the difficulty
experienced by many of our patients in obtaining adequate
first class proteins in the form of milk, cheese and eggs,
still persists. It is particularly unfortunate that no concessions
whatsoever are made to our tuberculous patients and the
increasing needs for such concessions is very real indeed.
The Examination of Recruits.
These continue to an increasing degree and large numbers
are referred to us by the Medical Boards for a Consultant
opinion where any disease of the chest is suspected.
It has, moreover, been our experience that several of cur
known cases of pulmonary tuberculosis have managed to get into
the Army without disclosing their history. Some of these have
subsequently been discharged from tho Army and referred to Us.
Occupational Therapy.
Attendances have been fairly normal, although there was
a slight fall in the numbers during September. Patients who
are too ill to attend the Occupational Therapy Class are given
work to do at home and the nursing sisters kindly help in the
distribution of this.
Toy making is a new craft which has been introduced and
is much enjoyed by the women patients, whilst the men continued
to do cane work, rug making, seagrass seating, tapestry, woodwork
and toy carving.
Most of the articles made by the patients are sold
immediately; this encourages the patients and the psychological
effect is marked, as they naturally like to think that
their work Is wanted and that they are doing something useful.
