BOROUGH INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL.
Dr. Palmer's observations are contained in the following
report upon the work of the Hospital:-
PREFACE.
During the year 161 patients were admitted to the Hospital
Block at Harts Sanatorium, Woodford Green, where the Infectious
Diseases Hospital was transferred at the beginning of the war.
This is the lowest number of eases ever admitted to the Hospital
and the low incidence of infectious disease is most gratifying
and welcome. In 1939 the number of cases admitted was 325. While
the number of notified cases of Diphtheria was low (45), the
disease when it does occur, continues to be severe, proving
that parents must continue to take advantage of the immunisation
schemes against Diphtheria for their children.
Per the sixth successive year there were no deaths from
Scarlet Fever and the disease continues to be generally mild in
character.
Cases of Paratyphoid Fever and Cerebro Spinal Meningitis
occurred, but these fortunately were not many in number, with
no deaths. In connection with the treatment of Cerebro-Spinal
Meningitis, the results obtained from the chemo-theurapeutic
use of Dagenan, better known as M & B 693, have been most
successful.
The number of deaths from all cases was 7, giving a mortality
rate of 4.34 per cent.
