to divide, prevented good collapse. In addition 2 attempted
inductions were tried, without success. In all, 527 refills were
given during the year. Continual use of the X-ray plant has been
made in controlling these cases. Where complete collapse of the
lung is prevented on account of small adhesions a division of
these is often possible by means of the cautery.
Ten cases were admitted to Hospital for this treatment;
two, where the diagnosis was doubtful, were sent for Bronchoscopy,
and one case was admitted to the London Hospital for
Thoracoplasty.
Gold Salts.
Twenty courses of treatment commenced in 1937, were completed.
68 courses were commenced in 1938, of which 18 were
current at the end of the year. 70 courses ended during the year,
of which 49 were full courses. 21 courses were imcomplete for
the following reasons:—
(a) Complications of the treatment: albuminuria, 4; buccal
ulcers, 1; loss of weight, 1. Complications were fewer during
the year, and where signs of development were observed,
the addition of Calcium Gluconate, injected intra-muscularly
at the same time as the Gold Salts, was thought to have a
beneficial effect in preventing them.
(b) Marked deterioration in general condition, 4.
(c) Patients who discharged themselves, 5.
(d) Transferred, 1.
(e) Short courses of 1 gm., 5.
Of the 49 full courses given to patients discharged during
the year, 10 cases were considered quiescent; 37 improved, and
2 not improved.
Tuberculin
Courses of Tuberculin were continued in selected cases, in
order to promote fibrosis, and where carefully given, were thought
to have a beneficial effect.
Insulin
Continued use of this preparation was made to stimulate
appetite, in cases which it was hoped to benefit. In a number
of cases, good results were obtained; a few patients derive no
benefit.
