County Borough of East Ham Education Committee
TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present the Annual Report on the
School Medical Department of the County Borough of East
Ham, for the year ended 31st December, 1938.
There were 15,737 children on the Elementary School
Roll as compared with 16,208 for the year 1937.
The number of routine and special cases of elementary
school children examined, totalled 8,168, showing a
decrease on the previous year of 896. Of this total 3,385
were re-examined at the time of re-inspection in the schools.
A routine medical examination of 931 pupils attending
the Secondary Schools has also been carried out. The
inspection included all scholars at the Grammar Schools.
The information contained in my report this year is
mainly statistical and no new developments or departures
have occurred during the period. It is satisfactory that the
work of the department was completed in spite of some
degree of disorganisation in the latter half of the year.
From the data which will be found under the separate
sections of this report, it will be appreciated that the needs
of the scholars as regards their health, physical development
and fitness, are being met in a complete and efficient
manner.
Consideration has been given to Circular 1457 and the
arrangements to be made for the medical examination of
scholars obtaining employment; my suggestions are included
under 4 (a) "Medical Inspection and Re-inspection" (see
page 127).
