Periodically visits are made to butchers' shops, market stalls
and meat vehicles.
(2) Food Premises. The number of inspections made of
food premises included 183 dairies, 90 of bakehouses, and 320
of other premises.
During the year, a number of small manufacturers of ice
cream ceased manufacturing on account of the unsatisfactory
nature of their premises and equipment and proceeded to retail
the prepacked article from reputable firms.
A survey of public houses and off-licencced houses was carried
out and in consequence a number of communications sent to the
licencees regarding unsatisfactory conditions. Attention was
particularly directed to the facilities for cleansing glasses, disposal
of waste beer, cellarage, food preparation, and sanitary
condition of premises. It was found that 20 out of 34 Public
Houses had no hot water supply in the bars for cleansing purposes—apparently
a cold rinse for beer glasses was deemed
sufficient. Requests for installation of running supplies of hot
and cold water have been made. Steps to ensure the proper disposal
to drain off residue of glasses were also taken.
During an inspection of a market stall, 23 unsound rabbits
were seized and subsequently condemmed. A prosecution resulted
in the occupier of the stall being fined £20.
(c). Adulteration.
Four hundred and fifty-six samples of foodstuffs were obtained
by the Sanitary Inspectors and submitted to the Public
Analyst. Details of the various samples and the results are included
in the following tabular statements.
The adulteration included (i) Ammoniated tincture of quinine
sold as dill water—in this case a prosecution was instituted (ii)
Mineral Water having a taste of disinfectant—a communication
was sent to the district in which the manufactory was situated,
as improper cleansing of the bottle was indicated. (iii) Fruit
Wine which was water, pleasantly flavoured and coloured—the
stock was withdrawn from sale and the vendor cautioned.
