East Ham Tuberculosis After Care Committee.
The Committee under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Councillor
E. M. C. Brace has continued to do excellent work.
One hundred and twenty-two patients have been provided
with clothing and bedding, and garments have been supplied to
necessitous patients during their stay in the Sanatorium.
Other patients have been helped by the provision of surgical
appliances and repairs to artificial limbs. At Christmas 100
parcels of groceries were given to the most deserving cases.
To augment our funds the Wakefield Dramatic Society gave
us a show, and the Walenders Social Club ran a Whist Drive.
Also the West Ham Football Club allowed us to make a collection
on their ground. To these people the Committee's best
thanks are due. The Committee itself ran a very successful
dance in the Town Hall.
Occupational Therapy.
During the year 48 sessions have been held in the Tuberculosis
and Chest Clinic, the attendances being 299 males and
298 females, or an average attendance of 12.4 per session. This
shows an increase on last year's figure which was 7.4 per
session.
Since the recent arrangements by which patients were
allowed a profit on the sale of their work, attendances have been
more regular, patients have taken a greater interest, and work
has retained its high standard. Also patients are now given tea
during the session and this is much appreciated.
It is found that patients take a greater interest in providing
articles which are on order than in making articles which are not
a definite requirement. A steady sale continues on Wednesday
afternoons when visitors can buy articles which are on view.
One of the greatest benefits of Occupational Therapy has
been the improved outlook and morale of patients who are now
able to earn a little money by their work.
In addition Miss Ross-Smith has held 48 sessions for men
and 46 sessions for women at Harts Sanatorium, with an attendance
of 956 and 669 respectively, or an average of 19.9 male and
14.5 female attendances per session.
