The same arrangements exist for the examination of swabs
from the throat and nose as in previous years.

The number of swabs examined at the Infectious Diseases Hospital and the Town Hall Laboratory :—

Of the above total 4,539 were examined at the hospital, as
compared with 1,267 for the year 1933, a much larger number
than in former years.
Legislation in Force.
Legislation in force was printed in the report for 1932.
During 1934, the following Bye-laws came into force :—
Nuisances by Dogs.
Houses-let-in-Lodgings.
Employment of Children and Street Trading.
Local Government Act, 1929.
A brief synopsis of the Council's administrative scheme as
approved by the Ministry of Health was set out in the 1930
Report.
No alterations or developments have taken place during 1934.
Public Assistance Domiciliary Medical Service.
Consequent upon the retirement of the District Medical
Officer in June, 1933, the Public Assistance Committee considered
the recommendations of the Minister of Health and British Medical
Association in regard to other schemes for the provision of medical
attendance to persons in receipt of out relief.
The Medical Practitioners of the district were invited to attend
a meeting of the Public Assistance Committee at which the
essential features of the scheme were discussed.
As a result the Council adopted a system whereby persons in
receipt of public assistance would be permitted "open choice" of
doctor.
