The Council of this County Borough is considering the provision
of maternity hospital accommodation on the Durban House
site which adjoins the East Ham Memorial Hospital. This would
provide for the admission of all types of cases and ante-natal
cases requiring treatment. The proposed accommodation would
be 27 beds with a separate isolation block of two beds, and would
permit of extension if required.
4. Isolation and Nursing of Cases of Puerperal Sepsis.
These cases are at present admitted to hospitals already
mentioned and the proposed maternity hospital would provide
such accommodation in the Borough.
5 Service of Consultant for Medical Practitioners.
No consultant is available at present apart from the Medical
Officer of Health, but the Council would consider the appointment
of a consulting Obstetrical Specialist in association with its Maternity
Hospital. His services would be available for the general
practitioners of the Borough when required.
A Maternity Hospital would centralise the maternity work
of the district and, in association with voluntary agencies and
those of the Council, provide both an effective and comprehensive
service within the Borough. It would thus adequately fulfil the
recommendations set forth in the various Memoranda of the
Minister of Health regarding Maternal Mortality.
The above report was considered and deferred for further
particulars to be submitted regarding Sterilized Maternity Outfits
and the services of an Obstetrical Specialist.
These particulars were embodied in a further report to the
Council, viz. :—-
Sterilized Maternity Outfits.
A small quantity of these outfits was ordered about three
years ago—very few of which were subsequently issued.
