for expectant mothers attended in their homes.
1931. 1932. 1933.
Number of mothers attended
by midwives 554 488 397
A clinic is not available in the North Woolwich area of the
Borough. The majority of cases are undertaken by midwives
who work in close co-operation with the Ante-Natal Centre of the
Plaistow Maternity Hospital at Tidal Basin.
It is proposed that a second Ante-Natal Clinic should be held
weekly at the new Church Road Centre in the Manor Park area
of the Borough, commencing at the beginning of the year.
Taken into conjunction with the services of the Voluntary
Societies mentioned, the needs of the Borough would appear to
be met, although further developments will take place with the
completion of the proposed Maternity Hospital.
An ante-natal clinic will be attached to this hospital. It will
be necessary to consider a clinic for the North Woolwich area
when expectant mothers have the opportunity of being admitted
to this Maternity Hospital.
2. Provision of Trained Midwives for all Confinements.
The number of midwives who notified the Local Supervising
Authority of their intention to practise during the year 1933 was
50. Except in 13 cases, all were associated with the voluntary
services enumetated above.
The number of expectant mothers attended by midwives practising
privately was 217 in 1933, and 277 in 1934 (to date).
