County Borough of East Ham Education Committee.
TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,—
I have the honour to present the Annual Report upon the work
carried out in the School Medical Department of the County
Borough of East Ham during the year ended 31st December, 1933.
Dr. W. Benton was responsible for these duties until his
retirement in September, by which time he had completed a period
of more than 22 years' administration of the Service. The
development and progress of School Medical work in East Ham
since its inception was outlined in the report for 1932, and consideration
of the many advancements and ultimate attainment
of a high standard of supervision and physical well-being of the
scholars, is a tribute to Dr. Benton's administrative ability and
foresight.
In order to avoid repetition and to condense the report, I have
endeavoured, as far as possible, to confine the subject matter to
the detailed work of the year under review. It will be seen that

19,719 children on the School Roll as compared with 19,770 for
the year of 1932 The number of routine and special cases of
Elementary School children examined totalled 10,493, approximately
the same as for the previous year. A complete medical
inspection of all the scholars in the secondary schools has also
been carried out.
The steady growth and increasing requirements of such a
service demand adequate accommodation for both clinical and
administrative purposes, and it is a matter for congratulation that
the combined centre for School Medical, Maternity and Child
Welfare Clinics, at Manor Park—the plans of which have already
passed the Council—is likely to materialise in the near future.
I am pleased to report also that the arrangements entered
into with the Woolwich Borough Council, by which accommoda-
