(i) A sample of Chipalata Sausages containing sulphur
dioxide in the proportion of 250 parts per million. The summons
issued was dismissed on the defendant's statement that a
preservative notice was displayed in the shop.
(ii) Two samples of Milk containing respectively 5 and 3 parts
per cent. of added water. The second portions of these samples
were inadvertently destroyed. Two further samples procured from
the same vendor were adulterated with 4 and 2 parts per cent.
respectively of added water. Summonses were laid but were not
proceeded with on account of the defendant's declaration of
bankruptcy.
(iii) A sample of Whisky having a strength of only 36 degrees
under proof. The case was reported to the Public Health Committee
and a letter of caution was sent to the vendor.
(iv) A sample of Ginger Wine which was certified as being
not wine, but composed mainly of sugar and water. No proceedings
were instituted as the manufacturer removed to an unknown
address.
Three hundred and sixty-five informal samples were taken,
of which 355 proved to be genuine. Of the non-genuine:—
(i) A sample of milk contained 17 per cent. added water and
was submitted by a resident who suspected it had been adulterated
after delivery.
(ii) A sample of Quinine and Phosphorus Tablets certified as
being deficient in all its ingredients. Correspondence with the
manufacturers elicited that the prescription given was compounded
without the sugar-coating on the tablets. In the absence of the
coating the analysis proved in accord with the stated formula and
no further action was taken.
(iii) A sample of shredded suet containing 6 parts per cent.
excess of flour. The manufacturers' suggestion that the excess
adhesion was due to the suet having been shredded during hot
weather, was accepted.
(iv) Sausages containing preservative.
(v) Milk containing 3 per cent. added water.
(vi) Whisky having a strength of 36½ degrees under proof,
