"HARTS " SANATORIUM.
History.—" Harts " was acquired by the East Ham Corporation
on 31st January, 1919, previous to which it had been
in private ownership. It consisted of a moderate-sized mansion,
with stabling-, two lodges, a farm house and just under thirty
acres of land.
The larger rooms of the main building were converted into
wards for female patients, whilst the smaller were utilised for
administrative and staff purposes. A hut and six shelters were
erected to accommodate male patients and also a dining hut for
both sexes, whilst part of the stabling housed the electrical plant,
etc., and alterations and adjustments were made for the laundry,
dispensary, incinerator, etc.
After being converted from a private residence into a public
institution it was formally opened on October 16th, 1920, by the
then Mayor, G. P. Dean, Esq., J.P., for the reception of 30 adult
male patients, 19 adult female and two female children, a total
of 51. The number of adult male patients was increased in
October, 1927, when five new shelters were added, thus bringing
the total up to 56 patients. In November, 1932, a commencement
was made upon a new pavilion to contain 32 beds (20 female and
12 male) for advanced and observation cases. When that is
complete the institution will accommodate approximately 80
patients, as a certain number of female beds now housed in the
main building will be transferred to the pavilion and the rooms so
vacated used for additional staff.
