stage, and treatment given, in a very large proportion of the
cases the disease will become permanently arrested. In 27.2
per cent. of the 1932 notifications tubercle bacilli were found in
the sputum. A large proportion of the remaining 72.8 per cent.
of the cases were notified in the early and curable stage of the
disease.
Our work is, therefore, directed towards a decrease in the
number of infectious cases amongst the primary notifications,
and establishing a diagnosis of tuberculosis in the earliest stage
of the disease.
The total number of notified cases on the Register on 31st
December, 1932, was 909 (Pulmonary and Non-Pulmonary). Of
these 321 were definitely infectious cases, i.e., cases in which
tubercle bacilli have been found in the sputum at some period of
the illness.

Deaths.

The number of deaths (1925-1932)from Tuberculosis is shown hereunder.

It will be observed that there is a tendency towards diminution
of deaths from this disease.
It is of interest to compare the death rates of pulmonary and
non-pulmonary cases in East Ham as compared with the totals for
England and Wales.
