Smoke Abatement.
There are few factories in the Borough and no serious complaint
of smoke nuisance has been received during the year. My
attention has been drawn verbally to two cases where there was
an emission of black smoke. Upon investigation it was found to
be due to careless stoking. In both instances the stokers were
seriously cautioned as to the result of any further dereliction. For
the last quarter no complaint was received and it is hoped that
this satisfactory condition will be maintained.
In the large summary table appended hereto it will be found
under item " smoke nuisance " that no fewer than eighty-five
nuisances have been scheduled under this heading. These refer
nearly entirely to smoke nuisances arising from defective kitchen
ranges or other stoves. I find that this is misleading to a stranger
reading the report. I have, therefore, had the analysis sheet
