This Act, inter alia, repealed the whole of the 1920 and 1921
Acts and made the general closing hours for all shops (with certain
exceptions) at nine in the evening on the late day and eight in the
evening on other days.
The principal effect of the new Act was that whereas Greengrocers
and Fruiterers could sell all fruits under the 1921 Act
till 10 p.m. on the late day and 9.30 p.m. on other days, under the
new Act they were compelled to close at 9 p.m. on the late day and
8 p.m. on other days.
Soon after the operation of the 1928 Act it became necessary to
send out a circular letter to all the Fruiterers and Greengrocers in
the Borough.
The effect of this letter was satisfactory, as nearly all the
tradesmen affected immediately complied with the provisions of the
Act.
