9,389 nuisances, generally the outcome of sanitary defects,
were dealt with by the Inspectors. (These are fully detailed on
inset p. 155). Of these nuisances, 5,062 were detected
in routine work, and 4,327 by house-to-house inspections. To
secure their abatement, the undermentioned Notices were
served :—

2,256 complaints were received—961 written and 1,295 verbal
—the figures for the previous year being 960 written and 1,502
