undertaken and acted upon shall we be nearer the goal of giving
the children of East Ham every possible chance of successfully
fighting ill-health and disease. What time can be given to preventive
work is shown by the fact that on December 31st, 580 children
were awaiting dental treatment from the school inspections.
During 1926 the Dental Clinic has been housed under its
former unhealthy conditions, but at last there are signs that the
Education Committee will, in the near future, sanction moving to
more salubrious quarters.
The tact and patience of the Dental Nurse, Miss Olifent, has
been no mean asset in the successful running of the Clinic.
Details of treatment given to mothers and children sent from
the Maternity and Child Welfare Centre are given in the following
table:—

There has been an increase in the number of children of the
Maternity and Child Welfare Centre attending the Dental Clinic
over the figures for 1925.
It is pleasing to record the fact that the septic mouth one used
to see in babies of 18 months and over is now very rare. This,
one hopes, is a sign of the times—that parents are realising the
importance of oral cleanliness and its close relation to the health
of the young child.
In conclusion, I should like to thank the Medical Officer of the
Maternity and Child Welfare Centre, Dr. Elsie Thomson, the
School Medical Officers, the Nurses, the Clerical Staff, and
teachers for their valued co-operation and assistance during the
year 1926.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
CYRIL S. NEAME.
