County Borough of East Ham Education Committee.
TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,—
I have the honour to present my Annual Report upon the work
of the School Medical Service of the County Borough of East Ham
for the year ended 31st December, 1926.
The number of routine and special cases examined of elementary
school children totalled 13,707, as compared with 13,201 in
1925, and a complete medical inspection of all children in the
Secondary School has also been carried out.
An examination of the statistics for the year shows that the
amount of work undertaken by the School Medical Service is
steadily increasing : this is only to be expected in view of the
growing recognition of the great importance, to physical and
mental health, of medical inspection and treatment in early life.
The closing year has been one of considerable progress; facilities
for ophthalmic treatment have been increased; arrangements
have been made for the installation of the necessary apparatus to
carry out both general and local ultra-violet radiation, and it is
anticipated that an Artificial Sunlight Clinic will be available, for
the treatment of suitable cases, early in the New Year; and the
long delayed provision of improved accommodation for the Dental
Clinic is approaching realisation.
I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my appreciation
of the work carried out by the local branch of the Invalid
Children's Aid Association, whereby, apart from the 25 children
who have been sent to Schools of Recovery by arrangement with
the Local Authority, 102 children have received open-air and convalescent
treatment.
